Military History of Colombia

• 1828 -1829 Gran Colombia-Peru War
This was a war fought over the control of the Jaén and Maynas territories. Borders were not precise and due to the mountainous regions along the Andes, it was hard to monitor. A formal peace treaty bought an end to the war and exacted the borders.

• 1839 – 1841 War of the Supremes
This was a civil conflict caused by different leaders trying to overthrow President Márquez. The regional leaders were known as ‘Jefes Supremos’ which is where the name War of the Supremes came from.

• 1860 – 1862 Colombian Civil War
This war was between the conservatives and the liberal rebel forces and saw the fall of the Granadine Confederation but also the start of the United States of Colombia.

• 1863   Ecuadorian –Colombian War
The United States of Colombia and Ecuador fought over border disputes and the want of the Ecuadorian President to unite his country across classes and religion.

• 1876  Colombain Civil WarThis was also known as the War of the Schools as the Liberal leader tried to implement a common schooling across the country whilst the religious conservatives preferred to keep schooling under the remit of the Catholic Church.

• 1885  Colombain Civil War

• 1899 – 1902 Thousand Days War

A war between the conservatives and the liberals in the newly formed Republic of Colombia over accusations of fraudulent elections.

• 1932 – 1933  Colombia – Peru War
This war was fought due to the heavy taxes imposed on sugar and was the first war to include air combat in South America.

• 1939 – 1945 World War II

• 1948 – 1958 La Violencia
Known in English as The Violence this was a war fought in the Colombian countryside yet again between the two main political parties.  It is thought to have started with the death of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán.

• 1950 – 1953 Korean War

• 1964 – ?  Colombian Armed Conflict
The Colombian Armed Conflict is the name given to the disputes that are happening in Colombia at the moment between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and the National Liberation Army.
