The cities of Colombia

The below list of cities represents the most highly populated cities of Colombia.


1. Bogotá

With a population of around 7 million people, Bogotá is the largest city, both spatially and population wise.  It is Colombia’s capital city and is situated at 2625 meters above sea level.  The European settlement dates from 1538 although it was a centre of population before the Spanish explorers came along.


2. Medellín
Situated in the Aburrá Valley, it has a population of around 2.4 million and is currently one of the top industrial cities in Colombia.  Medellín is important for the area due to its high number of universities, industry and health services.  Internationally the city is also promoted as a welcome place for tourists.


3. Cali
The full name of the city is Santiago de Cali and it is situated in the west of the country after being founded in 1536 by the Spanish.


4. Barranquilla
Situated by the Caribbean Sea, this is city well known for its ports. This is a relatively new city; in 1834 the population was little more than 10 thousand people.


5. Cartagena
The capital of the Bolivar Department is a popular tourist destination as well as being the centre of economic activity for the Caribbean region.


6. Cúcuta
Located in the North East of the country, Cúcuta is home to one of the busiest Colombian airports.  It has just shy of 1 million and is bordered by Venezula to the East.


7. Bucaramanga
With over 160 parks scattered across the city it is easy to understand why it is nicknamed ‘Colombia’s Beautiful City’.


8. Ibagué
Surrounded by fertile countryside which produces coffee, cacao, tobacco and sugarcane this city has sprung up with great transport links to the rest of the country.


9. Soledad
This is a city in the Atlántico Department and is known for having the fastest growth rate in the whole country.


10. Pereira
Pereira is the capital city of the Risaralda district and is located in a small valley which comes down from the Andes.  The indigenous populations were the Quimbaya tribes who were famous for their gold artworks.
